Glass Laminating
Glass lamination
Laminated glass can be described as layered, safety glass in which two panes are permanently joined by a plastic foil. Almost all types of glass can be laminated. Laminated glass is considered safety glass, meaning it does not cause injury when broken, and the foil holds all the broken pieces together. Laminated glass can be further strengthened by first tempering the laminated glass. This produces glass with structural properties. Laminates are used to make balustrades, canopies, steps, and glass floors. Curved laminated glass is also available.
What is glass lamination?
Lamination is the process of joining two or more sheets of glass using a special film (usually PVB or EVA) or resin. The result is a safe, laminated glass that retains its integrity even after shattering – shards remain adhered to the film, significantly increasing safety. This process also allows for additional properties to be added to the glass, such as UV protection, acoustic insulation, and the ability to achieve interesting aesthetic effects. As a result, laminated glass is considered safety glass and is widely used in architecture and interior design.
Advantages of laminated glass
01
Safety of use
after breakage, glass fragments remain attached to the interlayer, minimising the risk of injury.
02
Increased resistance
laminated glass is harder to break, which increases burglary protection.
03
Protection against noise
the interlayer dampens sound, improving acoustic insulation.
04
Design possibilities
the use of coloured, matt or printed interlayers offers wide design options.
